Campus Designer
XR Collaboratory, Cornell Tech
Year: 2024
Campus Designer is a simple VR design tool that allows users to sketch the next phase of the Cornell Tech campus on Roosevelt Island, by designing and adding structures to an existing 3D model of the campus.
OBJECTIVE
The Campus Designer project provides a sandbox environment for 3D interaction designers at the XR Collaboratory. It enables deployment of interaction technique prototypes to a functioning application.
Campus Designer is built using our XRC Toolkit, by importing UPM packages containing various tools and interaction techniques, such as XRC Grab Move, XRC Color Tool, XRC Scale Tool, XRC Mesh Tool, XRC Sphere Select, and more. The basic functionality and features of Campus Designer are inspired by existing VR design tools such as Gravity Sketch.
MY ROLE
As the Director of the XR Collaboratory at Cornell Tech, I lead the project, including system architecture, design, and engineering, and managed a team of two prototypers.
Team: Harald Haraldsson (XR Collaboratory), Sky Rolnick (XR Collaboratory), William Leon (XR Collaboratory)
IMPACT
Campus Designer and its XRC Toolkit packages are used as a reference for student projects in CS 5650: Virtual and Augmented Reality. Students are tasked with building a similar design tool, where the user’s objective is to design a simple car.
